Lady Captain's Day
We have had another busy week at Gorleston Golf Club and we'll start this newsletter with last Wednesday's Ladies Captain's Day. It was won with a fantastic 44 points by Jan Spilsted and Jean Eagling. Second came Victoria Watson and Jayne Needham with 41 points and third came Sue Lyndon and Vickie Peake with 40 points. Well done ladies it sounded like a great day with some superb scoring, over half the field got over 36 points which is tremendous stuff!
Foursomes Eclectic Open
Sunday we had the 36 hole Foursomes Eclectic Open. The best nett prize was won by Kevin Stokes (thankfully the lesson he had last week didn't curtail his good form) and John Cater with a nett 61.5, well done gents. The best scratch prize was won by two of my mates from Dereham, Richard Wilson and Simon Chaney with a gross 70. Talking of my old mates, the event had six of my friends from Dereham come over and see me and all really enjoyed the day. They will definitely come back next year and will probably bring a few more as they really enjoyed the format as it's so different to what they normally play and they all thought the course was fantastic! Top home players on the day, apart from the winners, were Stuart Mortimer and James Chadd with a nett 61.5 with Jim and Rosemary Woodhouse second also with a nett 61.5 but lost out on countback. First placed visitors were Spencer Thorpe and Jason Allen with a nett 63.
Thursday Stableford
In the Thursday Stableford, Division One was won by Bob Richardson with 38 points with John Cater second on 37 points. Simon Bekker won Division Two with 40 points with Fred Amis second on 37 points.
Junior Open
On Monday we had the Junior Open and it was great to see some of my old pupils from West Suffolk Golf Centre and Dereham who came over to see us. In total there were 30 juniors who played and the scoring was fantastic in breezy conditions. Habebul Islam from Ipswich Golf Club won the Ralph Moffitt Bowl with a fantastic gross 69 and Jack Cuthbert from Thorpeness won the handicap prize with a gross 70 (nett 66). One my former pupils, Lily Farrelly from Dereham won the West Cup for girls with a nett 68. Jamie Bool was the best home participant with a 78 gross (nett 71) Many thanks to all those who took part on the day and especially to those kind people who donated prizes, those who helped organise the day and those who provided the very nice food supplied at the half-way hut!
Captain/Pro Challenge
With all that's been going on I almost forgot to mention myself and Mark's latest captain/pro match which ended in defeat by two holes against Vice Captain Neil Youngs and Past Captain Angus Smith. Again the match was played in great spirit and for the first time in the matches we have played thus far, the captain wasn't at his best and although I played ok both Neil and Angus played much better. Plus I couldn't really go and beat Angus as he was the one gave me this job a few months ago and I didn't want to upset my future boss in Neil for next year! Thanks gents it was great fun! Next up we have Matt Alp and Daniel Crosby on Thursday.
Finally I just want to wish good luck to the Hambro team for Sunday who play against Haverhill in the semi-final of the Hambro Cup at Ufford Park. If anyone would like to go watch I know your support will be greatly appreciated.
