Hambro Team
We start this week with congratulations to our Hambro team who beat Stowmarket in a closely fought contest on Sunday by three holes! This now puts the team in the semi-finals where Haverhill await at a neutral venue (to be confirmed) on Sunday, 16 August. If you could mark the date in your diary and go along to support the team I know it would be greatly appreciated.
Thursday Stableford
In the Thursday Stableford, Hayden Grand won Division One with 40 points followed by Arthur Fellingham, Tony Marsham and Tony Cater all on 39 points. In Division Two John Fiddy won with 42 points followed by David Moretta, Colin Laws and Kevin Shaw with 40 points.
Captain/Pro Match
Also on Thursday, Mark and I played our second Captain/Pro match of the year and I would like to say it went much better than the first, but unfortunately it didn't. This time we were up against the very strong, father and son pair of Martin and Jonathan Ling. Jonathan certainly played very well throughout and Martin came in when needed to eventually win by two holes which was a score line that slightly flattered Mark and I as we were four down after 16 but won the last two holes to save a bit of pride. Although Mark and I did not play very well, we both thoroughly enjoyed the match which again was played in the right spirit. Thanks for the game gents. Martin and Jonathan go forward to the grand final with a two point head start on Saturday, 19 September. Next up for Mark and I are Wally Perring and Ivan Harvey this Thursday.
Lady Captain's Charity Open Day
Last Wednesday saw the Lady Captain's Charity Open Day which I know for sure was certainly enjoyed by four Dereham lady members that came over to see me and play. I hope a lot of money was raised for Lady Captain Maureen Dark's charity. On Monday the ladies had a nine hole yellow ball competition which was won by Lisa Gillings, Brenda Lewis and Edna Langston.
The Open
On Monday we saw the delayed conclusion of The Open at St Andrews. Although there were not many Europeans at the top of the leader board, in the end it was still a very exciting day's golf with Zach Johnson coming out as the deserved winner in the end. In our sweepstake A. Attoe Jnr drew Zach Johnson so therefore won £56. Second came J. Rivett and Tony Cater who drew Louis Oosthuizen and Mark Leishman and win £35 each. In fourth place came E. Reid and Stuart Pearce who drew Jordan Spieth and Jason Day and have won £15 each. In the lowest rounds A. Dyson had Dustin Johnson in the first round so won £15. In the second round Barry Collingwood and A. Attoe Jnr had H. Matsuyama and R. Henley who both shot 66 to win £7.50 each. Mark Leishman shot 64 in the third round so Tony Cater won a further £15 and in the fourth round four players all shot 66, Zach Johnson, Mark Leishman, Brendon Todd and Scott Arnold so A. Attoe Jnr, Tony Cater, A. Podd and M. Lewis each won £3.75. All winnings have now been put on to your pro shop accounts.
