Ladies Cranworth Team
We'll start this week's newsletter with some fantastic performances from our club teams in the County Competitions. First we'll start with last Thursday and a fantastic win for our ladies Cranworth team at Rookery Park against Thorpness in which they won 6 - 3. Congratulations to the squad consisting of Linda Jones, Marietta Holmes, Rosemary Woodhouse, Jayne Standen, Victoria Watson, Vera Woolnough, Andree Bloomfield and Ladies Captain Vonnie Thornton. The ladies will now play against Halesworth at Aldeburgh on Thursday, 20 July for a place in the Semi-finals.
Scratch Men's Team
On Saturday the scratch men's team had their second round match, they received a bye in the first round, of the Stenson Shield against Haverhill in what proved to be a dramatic conclusion. In the morning all four Gorleston pairings won their foursomes matches to take a 4 - 0 lead at lunch. Needing 6.5 points to win, both Josh Manser and Team Captain Danny Perring won their matches early leaving the rest of the team only needing a half to take the overall match but, thanks to some great play from Haverhill the half point required proved elusive and Haverhill won the remaining six matches to tie the match overall. This meant a sudden death play-off and up stepped Team Captain Danny to take charge. Danny backed himself to win the play-off and duly struck a hybrid to the back of the green on the first which put his opponent under too much pressure as he struck his in to the rough. Danny calmly two putted for his three to claim the match. Well done Danny and his team consisting of Josh, Jack Butcher, Daniel Crosby, Ben Leuty, Tommy Hunt, Ray Thomson and Matt Alp but let's not make it so dramatic next time. Next up in the Stenson we have Woodbridge away on Saturday, 22 July for a place in the Semis.
Seniors' Parks Trophy Team
On Monday the seniors had their latest Parks Trophy match at home to Rookery Park in which they won a very close match by three holes. Congratulations to Bob Richardson, Bob Cooper, Martin Pestle, Eddie Reid, Jim Robinson, Paul Platten, Richard Reynolds and Dave Henwood. They will now go on to face either Felixstowe or Fynn Valley away in the next round.
Captain/Pro Challenge
Last Thursday Stuart the Captain and I played our latest Captain/Pro Challenge match against last year's Captain Neil Youngs and David Wooden. In a very close match, there was never anymore than one point in it thanks to Stuart saving us on the front nine where I was all over the place, but it was the final two holes that proved pivotal. Standing on the 17th tee both teams were tied on one over par, but having hit a good tee shot David hit a superb second shot to within five foot from where he made a birdie for three points which put them one point ahead after my 12 footer for birdie slipped by. On the 18th I went for the green in two and just came up a little short. Meanwhile David was in the right hand Semi-rough about 150 yards away and hit a beautiful hybrid in to the middle of the green for a three nett two shots. I pitched up to five foot and rolled the putt in for birdie but David, calm as you like, two putted from 15 foot for a five nett four to claim the match 37 points to 36. Well done David and Neil, Neil you could of played that well last year, on your thoroughly deserved victory. No Captain/Pro match this Thursday as I'm away at Thetford with Clyde Leggett in the Lombard Trophy Qualifier.
On the Course...
On to competition news now and Sunday's Men's Monthly Stableford and it was Division Three that produced the best scores of the day with three players tying on 40 points, but it was Alan Attoe, with his new Wilson D300 driver, that beat David Mills and Allan Robbins to claim the division on countback. In Division Two Dean Barlow won with 39 points beating Tom Houchin in to second with 38 points and in Division One it was another close affair with three players tied at the top, but it was Peter Langford who beat Patrick Greaney and Bob Richardson on countback, all with 38 points, to claim the spoils.
