Hello golfers,
Hooray! A big cheer went up yesterday at Gorleston Golf Club when the flail finally arrived to cut down the controversial rough... Please remember though this is only short respite from the heavy rough as Danny will let it grow again as part of his long term rough management plan, as reported in last week's newsletter, and will cut it down again September time. We really do appreciate your concerns about the rough i.e. lost balls, slow play etc. but please, we ask for your patience as I'm sure all of you will be pleased with the end results when we have a beautifully defined golf course that will be the envy of many!
Continuing on the theme of the rough and following on from last week's newsletter when I mentioned for you to think about your strategy around the course and manage your game better, a few of you asked what my strategy is around the course at the moment. Now obviously this changes depending on wind direction and format of play etc. but if it were a calm day at this time of year and a strokeplay competition my strategy would be as follows (All white tees). As I stated last week obviously I can still get to the greens in regulation by hitting irons off the tee, but many can't. Most of you get shots on holes so maybe only need to get to par four greens in three to leave two putts for nett pars and as Dr Bob Rotella says, he a very famous golf phycologist, we see too many amateur golfers with an aggressive strategy and cautious swings where as pro golfers have cautious strategies, but positive swings.
If you would like to take a look at your course strategy with myself, then why not book a playing lesson where we can take a look at your own individual strategies around the course which ultimately is about trying to keep those six or worse numbers off your scorecards, because I bet your are all capable of making pars on holes, but it's the big numbers that ruin your scorecards. It's not how good your good shots are it's how good your bad shots are! Click here to get in touch for more details.
On the Course...
Despite the tough conditions out there at the moment, our members are still producing some great scores, so they must be using their brains. We'll start with last week's Men's Mid-week Stableford and Andy Clifford came in with a superb score of 40 points to win Division One by two points from Dave Wooden and Martin Pestle, both with 38 points. Ivan Harvey won Division Two with an equally impressive 40 points, but this time by just one point over Garry Pattison and Andrew Cadmore both with 39 points.
On Saturday the men had their Men's Invitation Day where the stand in pair of Les Dukes and Martin Bullen won with 42 points beating Ray Henwood and his guest brother Michael by two points.
On Monday the mixed section had an away match at the delightful Eaton Golf Club in Norwich, but unfortunately suffered a loss but thoroughly enjoyed the course.
On Tuesday the seniors had their second round match of the county knockout match for the Beaumont Trophy at home against Woodbridge and won by six holes. Well done to the team consisting of Colin Laws, Les Dukes, Wayman Arundle, Alan Attoe, Peter Aldred, Ray Pope, Ivan Harvey and Team Captain Keith Wright.
