Competition news

On The Course...

After a busy Easter weekend, we have lots to get through this week so we'll start with competition news. We'll start in order with last Thursday's Local Alliance meeting held at Rookery Park where Gorleston members Greg Carter and Andy Woodcock came second with 41 points, one point behind the winners who were playing at their home course. Two Gorleston members also came in third at Rookery, Bob Richardson and Colin Grant, with 41 points but lost on countback to Greg and Andy. Well played to all four of you!

On Good Friday the mixed section had a foursomes event where Ivan and Heather Harvey beat Rosemary Hodgkin and Chris Beare on countback both with a fine 37 points. Terri Wilkinson and Jim Robinson came third with 35 points.

On Saturday Tony Cater organised a fantastic Charity Day for Children with Cancer UK. On a fine Saturday afternoon there were 19 teams of four playing a fantastic, fun format with events such as teeing off the first with a kids driver, playing the 15 with an 8-iron only, two best scores on each, two worst scores on each hole, plus a chance to win £10,000 for a hole-in-one the fourth hole and £750 for a hole-in-one on 7 and 11. The course was in great condition and the greens superb as Danny the Course Manager used the iron on the greens for the first time. Unfortunately nobody won the hole-in-one prizes and although the day wasn't about winners and losers, just for the record Dad's Army of Barry Manser, Wally Perring, Brian Chadd and Alex Reid won with nett 158 in the medal scoring beating my team including Oli, Oli's brother Harry and Club Captain Stuart Low in to second by four shots. It was a fantastic day with everyone raising over £2,000 for charity. Well done Tony, his wife Kirsty and the rest of the family for putting on a great day and thank you to everyone else who took part and dug deep to give to a worthwhile cause. Good luck to Tony and Kirsty who are running the London Marathon this weekend to raise more money and also to Daniel Crosby who is running for Phab Kids which is a charity that "inspires and supports children and adults with and without disabilities to make more life together!"

On to Easter Sunday and the Men's Arthur Fell Bogey competition. Peter Bailey continued his good form of recent months by winning and beating the course by two holes. David Butcher came out top on countback after a three way tie for second, beating Kevin Woods and Chris Duffy all on +1.

Next on to Easter Monday and we had a Mixed Guildford Greensome, which is a pairs event where you both tee off, swap over and play each others second shot, then choose which ball is in the best position and play alternative shots in to the hole from there. Ray Pope and Tom Houchin came in as winners with a fine 40 points, beating Jenny and David Watson in to second on 36 points, who in turn beat Penny and Paul Platen in to third on countback.

Finally in competition news, on Wednesday the ladies played their latest Divisional Stablefords and for the Cancer Relief Spoon. On a day of low scoring, Marieta Holmes had an exceptional score of 44 points to win both the Cancer Relief Spoon for the best score of the day and also Division Two, well done Marieta a great score! In Division One Chris Knappett had a nice return to form by winning with 40 points, as did Rosemary Hodgkin who won Division Three with 36 points.

Club news

Coming Up This Week...

This week sees the first Summer Mid-week Stableford on Thursday. Saturday we have the Mixed Foursomes going out between 11:30am and 1:30pm. Sunday is the Monthly Stableford along with the Lombard Trophy Qualifier. This is an opportunity to join me at Thetford Golf Club on Thursday, 29 June for a betterball competition with an opportunity to progress, when we win, to go to the Grand Final for an all expenses paid in Portugal in September. Then next week is greens maintenance week where there will be no competitions as Danny and his team will be working hard on the course and particularly on the greens, hollow tinning and top dressing. Therefore there will temporary greens in action at various points throughout the week, weather permitting.

Swing Zone News
Swing Zone
Work has started on raising the roof in the Swing Zone so that many more of you can hit driver in there now without the fear of hitting the ceiling. It means I can do a lot more driver and ball fittings in there without having to cart half the shop up to the practice ground as I was having to do, plus it also means hopefully a lot more members will want to use the simulator when the weathers poor. Work should be completed by Friday.

If you would like to book a session in our new Swing Zone, please click here to get in touch.
