Fitting centre news

What could you gain from a fitting?

We'll start this week with fitting news and a putter fitting with Greg Carter. In my short time at Gorleston, despite doing many iron and driver fittings I haven't done many putter fittings, so this was a great time to dust off my PING putter fitting app. This app is on my phone and has a device cradle which clips on to a putter shaft. This app then gives me detailed information about what is happening in your putting stroke and from there I can fit a putter specifically for you. So first I got Greg to hit a few putts with his putter from 10 feet and the information about his stroke we gathered is below.

Greg was currently using a face balanced putter which is designed for straight back and straight through strokes, but as you can see from the information he has in fact a slight arc to his stroke with the club face being open at impact, result lots of pushed putts. What in fact Greg needed was a putter that was designed for the slight arc in his stroke and one that he could release the putter head through the stoke. Sure enough we gave Greg a more suitable putter and the difference was night and day, he started holing everything! We then hit a few longer ones just to make sure Greg liked the feel of the putter, which as we know is just as important as stats, and sure enough his pace judgement was excellent and in fact holed a couple of 20 footers! Needless to say Greg purchased a new PING putter and went away a very happy man, now obviously it's one thing holing putts on the practice green and another on the course, but I wouldn't mind betting that Greg's putting improves a lot over the next couple of months. If you would to book a putter fitting or lesson to find out more about your putting stroke, then just give me a bell or email me here.

Competition news

On the Course...

OK next we'll move on to competition news and we'll go back to last Thursday's Local Alliance meeting held at Rookery Park and a fantastic away win for Gorleston pair Tony Cranny and David Moore with a great total of 41 points with the course playing extremely long with the damp conditions, well done gents.

At the weekend we had a weekend of Roll-up Stablefords. On Saturday Ben Woolnough, fresh from a driver lesson, won with 41 points beating his Dad Terrance Woolnough in to second with 38 points. On Sunday Paul Finch won with 37 points with Steve Symonds second on 36 points.

Academy news

Coaching Packages

On to Academy news and as stated last week, another testimonial from one of my unlimited coaching package pupils, Ian Harbord. As Ian states in his testimonial below his handicap has been cut six shots this year which is a great achievement and testament to the amount of practice he puts in, those who regularly pop in to the shop will see Ian working on his game in the Swing Zone.

"After recently joining Gorleston Golf Club, my golf swing developed my reoccurring bad habit of opening my grip and swinging the club back with a closed face. I have had lessons with other pros in the past, but at this moment in time I was at the stage where I was looking forward to playing golf. Then after two holes hating every minute of it, I made the decision to have one last attempt to play the game I loved. I went into the shop and introduced myself to Duncan and explained that I needed help as everything about my game was going wrong and asked if he could he help me.

I booked a £90 block of lessons and, within minutes of my first lesson, I noticed straight away that Duncan pointed out the good things in my swing making me feel better in myself. He also said that several very good golfers have a similar golf swing to mine and he can alter a couple of things that will get me back on track. By the end of my first one hour lesson I was hitting several shots straight, hence putting a big smile back on my face. Things progressed from there and after booking a second block of lessons I noticed Duncan was advertising a year of unlimited coaching which I discussed with him and as usual he sold me the deal.

Since that day I haven't looked back, in fact many of my friends have commented on how my golf has improved in all areas. One of them, Bob Picton, was so impressed that he signed up himself.

I am coming to the end of my year and I can say I have developed a great friendship with Duncan and in my opinion Duncan and his team of Oli and Tom have become a great asset to Gorleston Golf Club. Within that year I have improved my golf in all areas, reduced my handicap by six shots and Duncan is still developing all areas of my game. My target has been set to reduce it by another six shots.

Basically I am hooked. It certainly looks like I will be asking Santa for money towards my unlimited golf pro package again this year. What a deal! You get your own pro for a year for under £10 a week!"

Thanks for that Ian keep up the great work! If anyone is interested in doing any of my unlimited lesson packages to really improve their game and help put a smile on their face, please contact me for more here details. Unlimited packages are £295 for six months or £495 for 12 months, but please be quick as places are limited and I've already had two more people sign-up.

Pros news

Kings Lynn Pro-Am

I thought I'd give a quick report on an entertaining Pro-Am at Kings Lynn last Friday with Howard Kellett, Howard Thornton and Martin Bullen. My golf for the first nine holes was some of the best I've played this year, but it was the same old story on the back nine, a couple of bad swings and three three putts put pay to me winning anything and I limped home with a 77. The team did not play anywhere near their potential, but as always with those three it was great fun and they kept me going when the red mist started to descend. Thanks guys! Home turf tomorrow at Royal Cromer with Matt Alp, Jonathan and Martin Ling which I'm very much looking forward to despite the forecast being very cold and windy and if I putt badly there, where I know every blade of grass, I'm certainly considering switching to putting left handed to get it out of my head.

Studio news

It's been great to see a few of you using the Swing Zone simulator to warm up before games. Remember you can use the Swing Zone to warm up for £3 for 5 minutes or £5 for 10 minutes.
