On Saturday, 8 October we have the Captain/Pro Finals Day and my, belated, 40th Birthday Bash, which I would love you all to attend. The golf is open to all members with an active handicap and will be a four ball better ball stableford with a 1pm shotgun start. The cost for those playing will be £10 each, including a buffet when we finish. For those that played in the matches or those that can't make the golf, but would like to come down and have a drink with me the cost will be £5 for the buffet. The entry sheet is on the mixed noticeboard with payment on entry in the shop.

Competition news

So close yet so far...

Ok now on to results and we'll start with the Stenson teams loss in the Final against Woodbridge at Diss on Saturday, 10 September. On a very damp day at Diss, the morning foursomes ended with the teams level at 2-2 with the points coming from Danny Western and Danny Perring and Chris Duffy and Steve Crosby, but it was the opening few matches in the afternoon that turned the momentum towards Woodbridge as they took the advantage in five of the first six matches for which Gorleston never recovered, eventually losing after Woodbridge had reached an unbeatable position at which stage the players in final two games, which were being tightly contested, agreed to take halves leaving Woodbridge the winners by 7.5 to 4.5. Full results were as follows:

Am - Foursomes - Ricky Dzierozynski and Dominic Rosser beat James Chadd and John Maddock 3&2, Toby Ayles and Tom Fowler lost to Danny Perring and Danny Western 1down, Jasper Johnson and Simon Peckford lost to Chris Duffy and Steve Crosby 3&2, James Tyler and Nathan Overton beat Matt Alp and Josh Manser 2&1.

Pm - Singles - Johnson lost to Alp 1down, Josh Robertson halved with Perring, Tyler beat Western 2&1, Fowler beat Maddock 6&5, Overton beat Chadd 5&3, Rosser beat Duffy 4&2, Dzierozynski halved with Manser, Ayles halved with Crosby.

I know the lads will be gutted with the loss, but will learn greatly from the experience and will take great heart from the fact they were able to compete and beat the county's best in every match apart from nine holes of the afternoon in the final. Well done lads you did the club proud!

Golf Champion Club Tournament

We'll stay with County Competitions and fresh off the defeat at Diss, the Gorleston trio of Danny Western, Chris Duffy and Danny Perring, through reward for them winning the County Team Scratch Championship earlier in the year, represented Gorleston and Suffolk at the England Golf Champion Club Tournament.

The Champion Club Tournament was played over the weekend of Saturday, 17 September and Sunday, 18 September at Stoke-By-Nayland Golf Club with 33 clubs taking part. Gorleston were Suffolk's representatives. Round One saw the Gorleston trio card a combined total of 236 which put them in 22nd place behind the leaders Woburn on 218. They added 223 in the Second Round to finish on 459 in 20th place. The event was won by Hayling Golf Club, Hampshire, with a total of 437. The best individual score being rcorded by Simon Richardson from Spalding Golf Club who had rounds of 70 and 66 for a total of 136.

Scores were as follows: Danny Western - 74 + 78 = 152, Chris Duffy - 80 + 71 = 151 and Danny Perring - 82 + 74 = 156.

Again a great effort lads and you can hold your heads high with your performances!

On the Course...

OK now on to Club Competition news and we'll start with last Wednesday's Ladies Divisional Stableford and Breakthrough Brooch. Jayne Needham won the Brooch along with Division Two with 38 points on countback from Jackie Walsh, who won Division One and Sandra Gale who won Division Three.

Next on to Thursday's Mens Mid-week Stableford and a return to form for John Cater who won Division One with 40 points with Ben Leuty pipping Ray Thomson to second on countback, both with 39 points. In Division Two Ray Mcwilliam beat Andrew Church on countback to win both with 42 points, in third came Nick Calver with 40 points.

On Saturday we had the latest Roll-up Stableford with Mark Seeley finally putting in the performance he had been threatening to do for a while, by winning with 43 points and getting cut to single figures for the first time. I'm pleased for Mark as he backed up the prediction I made back at the start of April where I said, after he had just been fitted for some Mizuno irons, in a newsletter; "Now I'm not really a betting man, but I wouldn't mind a wager on Mark producing some really good scores soon and that handicap will come tumbling down as his old equipment was really holding his game back. We'll wait and see. Good luck Mark, no pressure but don't let me down!" I love it when a plan comes together and well done Mark!

On Sunday we had the Monthly Medal and Mussino Cup where Shaun Crich won the Cup along with Division Two with a nett 66 beating Jason Dexter in to second with a nett 67. Bob Richardson won Division One with a nett 70 and Bill Haykin won Division Three with a nett 67.

OK, time to catch up with some orders now, and please remember to enter the Captain/Pro Finals Day and to grab your Ryder Cup Sweepstake squares!
